Lost grub, grub4dos & live cd fail?

Ok, this is probably me being a complete tool but here's the problem:

A while back I reinstalled XP, which obviously overwrote Grub - simple enough to fix... it should be anyway but all the fixes I could find (including those to overwrite the windows loader with grub) fail - the furthest I've got is with 'grub4dos' which ends up telling me it gave up waiting for the root. When I attempted to overwrite the MBR with grub it installed but the GUI was non-existant and command line interface simply refused to boot ('bad file or directory type' also in 'supergrubdisk' which I tried with legacy installed).

I've been into Kubuntu with a live cd - the partition seems fine from there and I've reinstalled grub2 a few times, I've also tried it with grub legacy with no luck. I wouldn't really care about formatting over it given all the trouble but right now, believe it or not, this is still better than my windows partition is going

Factor in my frazzled brain and the fact that the vast majority of advice around is for grub legacy, can anyone provide just a straightforward instruction for, from scratch removal and reinstall grub 2, preferably to be chainloaded from windows loader?

    Thanks a lot

If you follow this link its for restoring grub2, which should pick up your Windows partition and create a menu title for it.

        That worked perfectly, thanks!

Thanks for the reply too Vinny, the last of those I had tried before with only half-luck - Grub returned as command line but failed to boot.
