No touchpad detected on Sony VPCZ112GX

Model Sony VPCZ112GX. Can use usb mouse with no problem but cannot find (after a significant amount of searching) a way to get the touchpad detected. I can attach a USB mouse with perfect functionality.

If I need to go elsewhere to ask, please notify as I've created an account to file a bug w/ launchpad, etc.

New at this but have learned enough to know that command results of lspci, dmesg and lsusb might help. I'll happily forward whichever command results might help me and others who have this model with the same problem.

Please steer me so that I can give the information that might help.

    Thank you.

Verify that you have the package xserver-xorg-input-synaptics installed.

thank you so much for your fast response.

      here's results of apt-get

      sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

      Reading state information... Done
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is already the newest version.

what can i do next to help?

Interesting. The touchpad should be active - mine is - along with my USB mouse, at the same time. I can use either one interchangeably.

Reboot and enter your BIOS setup. Check the settings there. See if there is, by chance, a setting controlling the touchpad. It isn't likely, but ...

You could also install tpconfig and see if it 'sees' and allows you to configure the touchpad.

thank you again but already checked there.

only configurable bios options on this model are boot order and virtualization (other than obvious time, date, etc).

          next?

            tpconfig results:

Could not open PS/2 Port [/dev/psaux].

sudo tpconfig shows the following, sorry. can you suggest how i might move forward with this info?

              sudo tpconfig
              Found Synaptics Touchpad.
              Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode).

Re: No touchpad detected on Sony VPCZ112GX

                Try installing gpointing-device-settings

GSynaptics is a GUI configuration tool for the Synaptics touchpad
driver of the X server. This allows for modifications of the driver
                parameters on the fly.

We are doing no harm here - any of the packages installed that turn out not to help can always be uninstalled.

i looked in the following: utilities, system and settings. no corresponding app seen. double-checked there and graphics, internet, media and office. opened system settings, then keyboard & mouse -- no new settings there.

                      what am i missing?

Some apps don't show until a relog in to KDE.

console typing opened up window in which usb optical mouse shows up but no other devices. i did this after rebooting just in case it would help.

                            next? :-)

It is possible that the touchpad is a Sony proprietary device. Hmm. Are there any keys on the laptop that control the touchpad? To enable/disable it?

If you boot with the USB mouse not attached, does the touchpad work?
