Finally got around to staring at top for a few minutes and can confirm this post:

phy0 jumps the cpu to about 45% and everything freezes for about a second (mouse input, sound, etc.).
Appears to be a problem with the latest Atheros driver.... funny the post mentions ath5k when I was pretty sure mine was using ath9k, but oh-well.... annoying since I didn't have this issue with 9.04.
