[Solved] No Sound on VLC while others work fine - Jaunty

    Hey guys,

How come VLC does not play any sound while DragonPlayer,
Amarok and other players work fine ??

I have attached a snapshot of my VLC Sound settings,
could you suggest what may be wrong ??

I have tried the other options but they don't help.
Let me know if you want more info.

    Thnx guys

Just a guess: have you turned up the setting of PCM in the KMixer?

VLC and some other apps won't share the sound port. If you have amarok in the system tray try removing it and then retry the sound in VlC. You can see if something has your audio files (/dev/audio or /dev/snd or /dev/sndstat) open by using "list open files":
        sudo lsof | less
or send the output to a text file which you can browse at your leasure:
        sudo lsof > ls_output.txt

It may give you several thousand lines of output, but you can open the text file with kwrite and search for "audio", "snd" or "sndstat". Sort the file on the 82nd column to list by file name.

Also, here are some URLs that discuss this problem:

do you have pulseaudio or gnome installed. i can create that problem by installing pulseaudio on my machine, also breaks sound in flash videos (untill you select the correct device).

if you do have pulseaudio try uninstalling it and then reboot , and try again.

Thanks for the help people, but we'll have to wait till later sometime,
to proceed working on this issue.

You see my bro insists on using Windows, and the last time he was
working it crashed and gave him the blue screen.
Now the mbr is missing & it fails to boot Win in Safe Mode too.

Since I had installed Jaunty on a different partition on the same HDD
there is no way of booting to it also.

            Note to myself :
            - Do not install any OS on the same HDD as Win >
            - Wait till this happens again, to mock him

I'll try the steps to check if works and start a new thread later.
            Ciao till then

When he gets his personal info stolen and, perhaps, loses a few hundred dollars out of his bank account, or gets some $1,500 HDTV charged to his credit card, he'll become less insistent using Windows. Then, he'll do a lot of
