Re: What's the recommended package manager for Kubuntu?

I have a 12 hours young install of Kubuntu 9.04 386 on a Intel Core Duo 7200 and an XFX 630i motherboard. I haven't installed anything or change any repositories or even looked sideways at it. I did an update of the system as is, nothing else. But when I try to update using KpagageKit I get an error. I hadn't had any time yet to work on it, but I'm thinking on installing Kubuntu 8.04.2. I don't know what to expect if I get error on a brand new install. It's rather discouraging. I was already dealing with the grief of losing Amarok 1.4.10 (Amarok 2 is... nice. Not in the same league, or planet, as 1.4.10). And this KpackageKit ugliness. And Firefox is not installed by default? :P
    But I disgress.

As far as updates, I always open Konsole and type:

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
    It works beautifully for me.

    Does it follow that I reject all authority? Perish the thought! In the matter of boots, I defer to the authority of the bootmaker. <br /> -Mikhail Bakunin-, &quot;God and the State&quot;

...and probably more if you don't have the gtk libraries installed that i have.
57 packages and half the gnome desktop? No thank you

I'll stick with aptitude until (K)packagekit becomes a little more stable.
Judging from its so far developement that won't be so far away.

That is because recommended packages are nowadays installed by default. if you use "--no-install-recommends" with apt-get synaptic doesn't pull in the gnome recommends, only the packages that are actually required.

Maybe we get Shaman 2 to the Kubuntu 10.4 ?

          "Shaman is a plugin-based Packet-Manager for KDE".

          ...
At the moment we're beginning to plan the new Development-Roadmap.
          Shaman2 will be completely Plugin-based (GUI-Plugins, Backend-Plugins,
Provider-Plugins) and developed with KDE4. So it will not only be for
          ArchLinux.
One of our main goals is to provide a Package-Kit-Backend as well as providing
          a nice and customizable GUI...
The sources are at > /playground/sysadmin/shaman/
(KDE Playground - Applications that are early in their lifecycle.)

With the KDE 4.2 (Jaunty) it looks like this:

          (Compiling fine but not working...)
          Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

Genius! I wish I knew that! (or even RTFM). I always install Synaptic first thing and get all these extra unneeded packages.
