I have been on the internet a very long time and using computers even longer than that (back in the days when BBS'es where the hot stuff). But I never really got around to use IRC.
However - in Kubuntu there is an IRC client and some programs have their "forum" on IRC instead of on their webpage. So I have been "forced" to get on there. No complains :-)
I have discovered a couple of things that can be good to know for a new user.
Quassel is found under the Internet category. And when you start it, you already have a couple of channels there. I would recommend that you do the following in Quassel:
Settings>Configure>Networks
Click Add in the top right area to add a new network. In the Preset dropdown menu, you should find Freenode. Add it.
Then you can delete Kubuntu-IRC. Just delete everything.
The reason for this is simple. Some other (not Kubuntu related) software might point you to Freenode. If you think like me, you add Freenode and Quassel connects to both. BUT - as Kubuntu-IRC is actually Freenode as well, you get connected twice to the same network, and you have to use two different nicknames. Better to stay with one and have one nickname through the whole system.
You should edit the Identity section to add your nickname(s). After you have done that, you should register your nickname with Freenode. You can find more information about that and more at

After you have registeres, you can now tell Quassel to automatically log you in every time you start up Quassel. Settings>Configure>Networks and you find Auto Identify amon the tabs. turn it on and Quassel takes care of identifying you.
It is customary in IRC to start an answer with the nick of the person you want to answer so it is easier to have a conversation. But it can be a bit tiring to have to type it every time. Especially if it is one of the more creative types with mixed upper and lower and numbers...
So here is what to do: Type the first few letters of a nick and press <tab>. This will give you the first match in the list of nicks. If it is not the right one, press <tab> until you have the right one. Then write your message.
