Could you please try go to System -> Hardware Drivers? Do you see it there? If so, could you try to activate it?

strang mines onley 1 # off from yours and it worked out the box.

      vinny@desktop:~$ lspci | grep -i net
06:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5008 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
      hear using ath9k

      vinny@desktop:~$ lsmod | grep -i ath
      ath9k 280760 0
      mac80211 217592 1 ath9k
      led_class 12036 1 ath9k
I must say though the ath9k dident work in my other box (using the same card) and had to use ndiswrapper.

but I never did try the madwifi or wicd.

        Re: Compaq F700 Wireless

thanks lmilano, but I'v already done that. The funny thing is as soon as I installed Linux it did actually work, I tihnk I may have changed something? Possibly if I re-install it may would, not im not really sure about that. Is there a way to say "reformat" like windows has ?

@vinnywright Yeh when I do that it says "no wireless extensions" for all of them.

Ah, you need to tell us these things in advance, please, the more info the better!

Is it possible that there is some blacklisting going on? I had a similar experience (and fixed it) before:
          http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3104787.0

          Cheers!

            Re: Compaq F700 Wireless

Oh I thought you would have noticed from the picture I posted (first one), sorry. Urm possibly but I can't check because when I go to run Kubuntu I get this:
            [img width=400 height=221]http://grab.by/6Z2[/img]
            It says:
The following installation problem was detected while trying to sart KDE:

            No write access to '/home/ben/.ICEauthority'.

            KDE is unable to start.
This happens after I login, so when it loads these:

it gets to the globe, then stops and If I click on the box it just gives me the above error.

              Re: Compaq F700 Wireless

no worries. Can you login in some other environment? Even if you can in safemode, just try this in a console window:

              Code:
              sudo chmod u+w /home/ben/.ICEauthority
If that doesn't work, maybe this (which will remove the file, in the hope it will be recreated with the proper permissions:

              Code:
              sudo rm /home/ben/.ICEauthority

                  Re: Compaq F700 Wireless

This is a symptom of using sudo to run a kde program as root when you are supposed to use kdesudo

thanks, but didn't do anything. I think I'll just format my Linux partition and re-install

                      Re: Compaq F700 Wireless

skunk is correct. Also, don't perform root operations (using a file browser as root, installing software, etc.) in your home folder, or it will happen again.

If you don't need the practice of reinstalling, and don't have a lot of "settings" that you need to keep, you can (after shutting down X) simply rename (or delete) the .kde folder, and the .ICEauthority and .Xauthority files, and then log back in to a clean default desktop.

                      Ctrl-Alt-F1, and log in.

                      ~$ sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
                      ~$ mv .kde .kde_bak
                      ~$ rm .ICEauthority
                      ~$ rm .Xauthority
                      ~$ sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start

and you should be back in business.

Ahh ok thanks, I shall try that. I don't mind re-installing I hate nothing on there at all that I need, and my Network Manager went when I tried wcid, I prefer the default one but don't know to get it back. But thanks ill have a go at that!

Quite frankly, wicd has been more reliable for me, but I like Network Manager KDE better, so I use it wherever it works, and fall back to wicd otherwise (and I really think it would be wise of Kubuntu to do this systematically, i.e. allow you to install both and switch back and forth in a way that is easy for a regular user).

                            Cheers!
