Problems with plasma widget network manager

Hi, I'm on Kubuntu 9.04 alpha 6, and i Can't connect to my WiFi network. I've introduced the WEP key in both options: Passphrase and Hex.
I could connect with knetworkmanager, but I think I used the ASCII option to introduce the key.

Any ideas? Do I have to do something before or configure other things?

Are you trying to configure it with plasma-widget-network-manager? Or through /etc/network/interfaces? Others here have recommended wicd for a network manager, and I resisted for a while but it will configure a wireless easily and restart it at boot before KDM starts, as well as dealing with ethernet.

At the moment I have to say there is nothing better than wicd, so

sudo aptitude install wicd

Then start it and configure your wireless.

Wow! Nice program this wicd! the only thing it lacks is KDE integration, but it's very useful, because it works!

I have issues to configure static IP address on wlan0 in Network Manager.
Let's hope it will be fixed soon!

Another possible solution:

I just received a new wireless router, and had no luck getting it to work in encrypted mode with JJ. Set up just fine in 8.10. I have both the Gnome and KDE desktops installed in JJ, and I logged into a Gnome session, configured the wireless network there, then logged out and back into KDE. Lo! it works. I guess the Network Manager widget is still a little more in the alpha phase than a lot of the rest of JJ. Will be cool when it works.

I have to agree whole heartedly. At this time, wicd beats network-manager left and right. You install it, it works and stays working even when a new kernel comes along. Nothing better at this time.

for me the best working solution is nm-applet ( gnome applet )

install network-manager-gnome and put nm-applet @ autostart in kde control panel

pptp works
wireless works
Mobile broadband works

I had the same issue just now. When I upgraded to the beta I could see my wireless network, but couldn't connect. Clicking on it in the list would bring up a profile window, but once I entered the connection data, it wouldn't connect. Clicking on the network name again would just repeat it, until I had several duplicate profiles.

So, I right-clicked on the NM icon, removed all the dupe profiles except one, made sure that the checkbox to connect automatically was selected, then I logged out. When I logged back in, it connected to my router without any problem.

It looks like it'll be a nice plasmoid once the bugs are worked out, but so far it's obviously buggy. But then so was knetworkmanager for quite some time.

What I have found is that the network-manager-kde application is now totally redundant. Network-manager-gnome is superfluous too, for kde. In fact the more network applications one has installed, the more likely it is not to work.

Currently I'm simply using network manager and the plasma widget. It is the latter that puts the network config icon within system settings so for kde integration, that's it. The only PITA is that doing things that way invokes kwallet that requires a password. If I could get round that I would be happy as the lasma widget looks very nice.

I couldn't make wicd work when I tried it last night - probably due to a lack of understanding on my part. Having had some useful guidance from Mando Hacker on the subject, I'll probably give it another go tonight.

Liquidator makes some very good points. There are entirely too many packages trying to control the networks. They are getting in each others way and causing trouble. I would love to use a default Kubuntu/KDE network solution but even if the network-manager applets are reduced to one and if it works perfectly it will still not start a wireless connection before the user logs in.

For that reason I have been using wicd on my laptop, after removing all network-manager packages and leaving only the lo interface in /etc/network/interfaces. That works very well.

On my workstation (ethernet only) the plasma-widget-network-manager and network-manager manage to not screw up the networking except for causing confusion as to how it is configured. I can not say that they add anything though. I keep them installed hoping that Debian/Kubuntu will settle on a system that works.

A Solid Wicd backend is currently in KDE Review, which will hopefully be moved in for KDE 4.3.
Hopefully Network Management ( KDE 4 version of KNetworkManager ) will remove its NetworkManager dependency so it can be used with alternate backends.

I guess you have two options.

1) Use wicd like other people
2) Use nm-applet from network-manager-gnome package

I'm on Number 2 and everything works, wireless, mobile broadband, etc.
