[won't fix] broken kde4, window decoration missing after upgrade from 8.04

    Hello,

    I am currently using kubuntu 8.04 / kde3.
Since I know it's a big step to go from 8.04 / kde3 to 9.04 / kde4, I am *testing* the upgrade from one to the other on a separate drive, using a backup I made with dar.

The test upgrade itself seemed to go smoothly, though there were some parsing error messages for some packages that I have not had time to copy.

After reboot, I could do my first login into my new kde4 platform. However many things seemed to be broken:
    - there are no window decoration for applications (konqueror, konsole, etc.)
    - the taskbar had only the buttons, but not the (how do you call that?) ... the thing in the taskbar representing the window.
    - I couldn't do ALT+TAB nor CTRL+TAB to change window / desktop.
    - I couldn't type anything in the konqueror/google search box.
    - and a few other things that I already noticed.

I had followed the following for my upgrade:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ja...s/Kubuntu/8.04

I searched but couldn't find anyone with a similar problem.

Before I wipe out the partition and try again the upgrade, what could I attempt to find the cause of the problem?

Upgrading is itself a very lengthy process, so I'd like to be very well prepared to make all necessary notes during my next test. I am not sure how to attempt the upgrade via the CLI so that I have a complete log of the process.

    Any general or specific advice?

    Thank you.

Would this do for the CLI upgrade?
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This thread may be useful (follow the steps in my two posts)

Thank you kubicle, that seems related.
I'll try that and report back after.

        Blessings.

No further help is required as I finally made a fresh install.

          For the record:
          kde-window-manager was properly installed.
I couldn't restart the window manager since i couldn't type anything from a windowed session. I could open konqueror / konsole, etc. but couldn't type anything. I tried from pure console session (ctrl + alt + F1) but it didn't work.

It seemed the upgrade was hopelessly broken. Thankfully, it was only a test upgrade. It shows the utility of testing first!

In the meantime, I bought a brand new computer. Thus I ended up making a fresh install of Kubuntu 9.10 on it, and moved my data manually from the old to the new computer. Thus I avoided the complexities of a full dist upgrade combined with a KDE3->KDE4 upgrade.

Thank you again for your help (in this an other issues on this forum).
