?RESOLVED? FONERA Wireless issues with HP Photosmart Premium

I never could print via wireless from my HP Photosmart c6180. Then something crawled inside it and died, the machine made terrible sounds, couldn't copy or scan - horrible stuff. But I did manage to secure a refurbished HP Photosmart Premium. I logged the passphrase and WPA key for the exclusive side of my FON router into the printer, and configured it in system settings. When I open OpenOffice the Photosmart Premium appears. However test pages don't print. The printer state in Driver Details says "unable to locate printer!" Here's the strange part. It refers to the printer by the name I gave its network. I have this old Toshiba Satellite, and the printer; my network. What am I missing here? The job I sent from OOffice says "pending" and has for twenty five minutes.

Ensure you have the hplip package installed. If it isn't, install it:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install hplip
Access CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) using your browser: http://localhost:631 to set up the printer.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007

And once you install HPLIP, if you get a error message trying to configure your device (Unable to find an appropriate su/sudo utility to run hp-setup), then simply from Konsole (or Alt-F2) use:

      Code:
      kdesudo hp-setup
Enter your password, and away you go.

If you ever have trouble finding your printer again, make sure you didn't forget resetting your router, as that will get you a new IP address, while CUPS will still be looking for the old one... I had made that mistake while back. Be sure and log into your router and check that the IP it shows for the printer matches the one in CUPS.

Mine is a HP Photosmart c309a and it works great wirelessly. We should be able to figure this out.

Well that's the rub. See I have a FON router - trying to share my bandwidth. So I try the secure side, and the IP address I get from my 309-A does not match what's listed on the Toshiba Satellite. I switch to the open side; same thing, though this time only a digit off at the end. I cannot get the IP address from either machine to agree with the other! > When I visit HPLIP it cannot find a wireless printer signal; no small wonder!

I might not be following exactly what you are saying, but if I do understand... the IP that the router says the printer is, is the IP of the printer. If your computer, via CUPS (?) has a different IP for your printer, then that one is wrong would be my guess. You might just be able to go through the CUPS Modify Printer dialog and change the IP...

(I'm out of town this weekend, so no more "help" from me until Monday )

hp-setup should find it though, even if you have the wrong IP in CUPS... hmmmm...

I had been handling this through HPLIP so far - perhaps part of the problem. I will try again to install CUPS and see if I can adjust the IP my laptop has for the printer.

Re: Wireless issues with HP Photosmart Premium

Thankfully there was no need to install CUPS. I just ran it from the site! 8) I used the IP address in the configuration summary of my network test report to locate the printer. Once I finished tweaking the printer options CUPS moved to a blank page with this address

              http://localhost:631/admin/?OP=redir...inters/HPC309A

Returning to OOffice I try to print a document. Look at that! I see HPC309A as an option. I choose it and print. The job remains in the print tray even now.. If I move my mouse over it the little caption reads 'Printer HPC309A may not be connected.' A visit to the control module shows CUPS has set up the printer, but gives as its state "Stopped! Unable to locate printer!"

              hmmm..

So I try kdesudo hp setup

I want to say I've tried this before. This time however it finds my printer. I identify the printer. It prints a test page. I then try from OOffice. It prints another page.

I never once connected the printer to my computer via USB... that is not necessary in a normal setup. So first connect the printer to your wireless network, and then confirm it is connected by checking your router, and then run the hp-setup command. Note that you have to install the hp-setup utility...
                  Code:
                  sudo apt-get install hplip
                  Code:
                  sudo apt-get install hplip-gui
                  and then

                  Code:
                  kdesudo hp-setup
Also, the bluetooth printing connection I believe is only really for printing photos... you want to connect over 802.11 for normal wireless printing.

Does it show up in CUPS at all?

Re: *RESOLVED*Wireless issues with HP Photosmart Premium

When I logged the printer through CUPS, then revisited the HP Setup through terminal, my laptop then found my printer and I could print. Several days have passed however since that use, and recently I find the printer again does not receive the print job. The job sits in the cue, and occasionally I get reports saying "your printer may not be connected." So I logged back into the secure side of my FON router through the printer. It gave me the same IP address that appears in the URI for the printer in setup. So the printer and the file for it in printer config have the same address, but now its "not connected."

Point of etiquette: should I remove the RESOLVED for this issue. It clearly isn't resolved.

Sorry to hear your troubles are back. You should absolutely change the subject since your problem has not been resolved.

Have you tried looking for help in any FON router forum? Perhaps the issue is more related to that piece of hardware than the printer or linux... those are a little different than a standard NAT router, if I recall...

Re: Wireless issues with HP Photosmart Premium

Call it my American provincialism at work, but I can't get over the fixation Movimiento FON has with Windows. Long have I thought all Europeans hated Bill Gates, had great fashion sense, and compiled their own code.

Okay, all kidding aside I've wiped my printers from printer config and chosen to start over. So I start with

                            kdesudo hp-setup

I go for the automatic discovery options; but no such luck. Terminal gives me

Error: no device found on bus: net

Hm. I still have my wireless test report from the other night, the one showing my printers IP address. So I choose Manual Discovery instead, and enter the address. I have no idea what JetDirect Port means, so I leave it on 1. No luck, it can't locate the device. Hm. The wireless summary on my HP c309a has that IP still listed.

I return to the tanned glory of CUPS. Once again I enter the HP Photosmart name; yes, its still in my office, still the grinding, bumping, wheezing printing nightmare waiting to happen HP all-in-ones are cracked up to be. I again enter the IPP address, choose printer type, la-di-da. There, I've logged into CUPS. So far I'm just retracing my footsteps from the last time. So I go back to hp-setup.

Error: no device found on bus: net

Hm. Just because my printer has an IP, and has the router logged into the wireless summary doesn't mean it has remembered the WPA key to access the router! Flushed with excitement I race back to the printer and enter my WPA key! It lists a host name, IP and MAC (?), but no password in the summary. I enter the WPA, then return to HP-setup.

Error: no device found on bus: net

But, wait! I wasn't finished configuring the printer on CUPS, ah-ha! I successfully finish configuration. Then I return to hp-setup.

Error: no device found on bus: net

Next steps: I'm going to log off this encrypted connection and visit the public side of FON.

Ha! Good luck on the public side: WICD Manager cannot seem to get the public side IP addy for my router. On top of that I spent a solid hour finding the email for someone at FON - their Help site is a nightmare! So I remove the printer I created last night and tried again through CUPS. Am I insane, or is this how you enter IPP -

                              ipp://xxx.xxx.xx.xxx

CUPS establishes yet another version, but cannot print a test page. Something different: tonight I try pinging the printer's address. DESTINATION HOST UNREACHABLE. I'm guessing the culprit here is the router. We'll see how far I get with their version of tech support..
