Matrox G550 AGP dual head DVI/VGA in KDE 4.3

I have a problem getting the dual monitor setup to work.

I have picture in the right resolution - 1600x1200, but it is mirrored so I have the same on both monitors.

In the display settings, it is not detected as a multiple head graphics card. So I do not get the option to set them up as two monitors.

I have tinkered a bit with xorg.conf to see if I could get it to work. But so far it shows the same. I have tried two version. Here are both. The longer one is a modification of one I found on the internet.

Code:

Any other commands I can run to get things working or find out more?

Re: Matrox G550 AGP dual head DVI/VGA in KDE 4.3

One more piece of information. An lspci gives this:

Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 MP [IGD4-2P] System Controller (rev 11)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 MP [IGD4-2P] AGP Bridge
00:07.0 ISA bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] ISA (rev 04)
00:07.1 IDE interface: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] IDE (rev 04)
00:07.3 Bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] ACPI (rev 03)
00:08.0 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB (rev 43)
00:08.1 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB (rev 43)
00:08.2 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB 2.0 (rev 04)
00:10.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] PCI (rev 04)
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G550 AGP (rev 01)
02:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
02:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: Xilinx Corporation RME Digi9652 (Hammerfall) (rev 03)
02:06.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
The multi monitor controllers I have set up so farhas had more than one line when running this command. And as far as I have understood, xorg.conf does not influence this listing?

In my mind this points to a problem with the driver... Anyone that can tell me more?

Re: Matrox G550 AGP dual head DVI/VGA in KDE 4.3

The PCI bus list "lspci" is just a hardware-level list of the devices that have an address on the PCI bus. That includes your Matrox GPU, but not monitors.

HAL is now, under the new X.org, responsible for identifying and configuring GPUs. The /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is largely irrelevant to running the display, but I think it still has a function for special setups such as you are attempting. Setting up dual monitors is a further complexity that you'll have to research -- Matrox is far less popular than Intel, nVidia, and ATI as graphics chips go. There just aren't many examples laying around ...

Re: Matrox G550 AGP dual head DVI/VGA in KDE 4.3

The reason I think it might be driver related is this:

If the card does not have a listing per output in lspci (that just list the hardware), how wil X and the other programs be able to do anything at all? Maybe there is something special about Matrox... The nVidias and ATI cards I have set up so far have all a listing per output...

Anyway - found something related to Matrox in the repo's. Gonna try that as soon as I have finished upgrading to KDE 4.3rc2 :-)

That's your GPU, right? It has an address on the PCI bus, so the driver should find it there.

What does
Code:
lsmod
show?

I will run that command as soon as my apt-get upgrade is finished :-)

And yes, it is my graphics card.

I deleted the xorg.conf I added and rebooted without anything, forcing X to use default values. Here is the Xorg.0.log - I found it interesting and will try to piece together something that might work.

Posted this in the KDE forum as well as I am not able to find a solution anywhere. There must be someone that has this working...

Just discovered that the AGP G550 Millennium version is still for sale in Norway! So the card is not that outdated :-)

Try this one. You'll need to change the monitor frequencies and resolution but it might work. Give it a shot.

Code:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier	"Monitor[0]"
Option "LeftOf" "Device[1]"
HorizSync	31.5-93.8
VertRefresh	50-85
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor[1]"
HorizSync 28-80
VertRefresh 43-60
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "External Screen"
Device "Device[0]"
Monitor "Monitor[0]"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1920x1200"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Thanks for the try. Unfortunately, it did not work.

From the log:

Code:

Was this from a Kubuntu 9.04 installation?

Nah, just me trying to hand code an xorg file that might work for you. I have Intel and ATI cards in my computers. That error tells me the driver does not support randr 1.2. From the xorg.conf man page...

Option "LeftOf" "output"
This optional entry specifies that the monitor should be positioned to the left of the output (not monitor) of the given name. (RandR 1.2-supporting drivers only)

All is not lost, I still think you can get it working using a ServerLayout section in the xorg.conf file. I'll give it another shot tomorrow.
linux && bash = "the future"

Last try. Hope this works. Again, don't forget to tweak the frequencies to your monitors and resolutions. You can try it with and without the ServerFlags section.

Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device[0]"

EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device[1]"

Sorry to report back so late. It did not work any better :-(

I have now added the xorg ppa, upgraded, deleted my xorg.con and rebooted. This is what I get if I just type xrandr in a terminal:

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1600 x 1200, maximum 1600 x 1200

To me, it looks like X is not detecting the second head of the card even if it is enabled and mirroring the first head. As this was working in Linux Mint (using Gnome admittedly - 8.10 based) there is no reason why this should not work now...
