    Changing laptop fan settings?

I'm hoping I've got this in the right forum.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop, ~4 years old. The fan runs very often. It will run for a few minutes, then shut off for a few minutes, then run again, ...

I have one of those cooler pads under it (with the miniature fans), which doesn't run continuously (seems to work when it wants to), but even when it's running that doesn't seem to make a difference.

I used to just ignore it, but lately (being so old and all) it's gotten rather noisy, and that worries me. I remember reading something *somewhere* about changing some configuration option so it doesn't run as much, but I had a hard time following it.

Can someone tell me how to set the fan to run less often?

    Thanks!

The fan speed settings are normaly controlled by the system BIOS rather than the OS, if the cooler is running more than it used to (or making more noise) it may be time to get it cleaned, over time they collect dust and the fan has to work a lot harder to keep the things cool.
