Re: Intrepid with KDE 4.2 -- Google Earth 5 shows logo and tip of the day and exits

Google Earth from the Medibuntu repository is still on version 4, maybe you should remove version 5, add Medibuntu to Adept sources and reinstall. You will probably need to disable Desktop Effects as well.Originally posted by jmarxerIntrepid with KDE 4.2 -- Google Earth 5 shows logo and tip of the day and exits immediately.

I just solved the same problem today. You have to rename libcrypto.so.0.9.8 in the directory where google earth is installed to something like libcrypto.so.0.9.8.bakOriginally posted by jmarxerIntrepid with KDE 4.2 -- Google Earth 5 shows logo and tip of the day and exits immediately.

This has been a reoccurring problem for 4 or 5 years on about every distro I've used over that period."A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”
 – John F. Kennedy, February 26, 1962.

I tried to rename it, but it says "Rename failed." Do I have to be logged in as administrator or something? How would I do that? As you probably can tell I'm a newbie to Linux and Kubuntu, but I really like it a lot. No more Windows for me!

 Thanks!

It is possible that it requires root rights. In that case, you have many options:Originally posted by reidunI tried to rename it, but it says "Rename failed." If you have Krusader installed, it gives you an option to start as root,
Or you can open the Konsole, start the Midnight Commander with root rights (sudo mc) and rename it from there.
Or you can simply open the Konsole, go to the directory where it is installed and type sudo mv oldname newname

Re: Intrepid with KDE 4.2 -- Google Earth 5 shows logo and tip of the day and exits

Thanks, Cleb, but I need more help! Since I don't know if I have Krusader installed, or what Midnight Commander is, I tried your last option, which sounded simple enough. However...

 I typed:

 Root/usr/lib/googleearth sudo mv libcrypto.so.0.9.8 libcrypto.so.0.9.8.bak

 It said:

bash: Root/usr/lib/googleearth: No such file or directory

Root/usr/lib/googleearth is the correct directory, but is there something else I should type before Root? Or am I missing something else?

 cd /usr/lib/googleearth
 and then
 sudo mv libcrypto.so.0.9.8 libcrypto.so.0.9.8.bak

Just so you know what it does: cd changes the directory , sudo gives you administrator rights and mv is the rename command.

Krusader is something like Total Commander in windows, you can install it by typing sudo apt-get install krusader in the konsole.
Midnight commander is like the good old Norton Commander you might remember from the DOS times.

Re: Intrepid with KDE 4.2 -- Google Earth 5 shows logo and tip of the day and exits

Ok, thanks! I got the name change to work now. Thanks for the explanation of the commands. That is very helpful.

But I still have a problem. Now GoogleEarth doesn't start at all. It only shows the bouncing icon and the tab at the bottom, but then those both go away and nothing happens.

I changed the name of the libcrypto.so.0.9.8 file that is inside the GoogleEarth folder, but I noticed there is also a file by the same name in the lib folder where the GoogleEarth folder is. Did I change the wrong one?
