Attaching images to emails in Thunderbird (SOLVED)

    Ho.

I've got a post on Mozillazine but with no luck re this item - perhaps some one here can give a hint.

Up to recently we've been attaching images to emails (using Thunderbird in Windoze) and have experienced no sizing problems. In Linux the images attach themselves and appear in the text and they are also HUGE!

Is there a simple way to attach images without them expanding to twice the size of the screen? (Slight exaggeration there but I hope you get the idea).

PS I do not want to have to re-install windows and run a dual system.

Sure you can fix this problem.

But you're tackling the issue on the wrong end, it's not that the pictures show up huge, they ARE huge!
Present day digital camera's make photo's that are several times larger than the typical screen size.
My Canon G10 makes pictures that are 4 times larger than an HD screen.
    (And I'd like to have a Nikon D3X 8) )

So the thing to do is making your picture the right size BEFORE attaching it to a mail.

I prefer to use gwenview for this resizing but there are other utilities available.
You can do a manual resize and save the smaller version but gwenview also has the option to send the picture to Thunderbird while at the same time reducing it's size, similar as to how you did it in Windows.
This way there will be no smaller size saved, the small version is only attached to a new mail.

The next question is of course what size is best, this depends a lot on the subject, the type of internet connection the addressee has and the size of his mail box.
But 800 pixels on the long side is usually sufficient.
When I know the addressee has a high-def screen and providing the subject is worth it I might go bigger.

Teunis - thanks I've got the idea now.

I've installed the kipi packages as I assume that is where the options you describe are located.

Still an issue though because this version of kipi does not work with gwenview in kde 4 only 3. Apparently there is a beta kipi 'bundle' on Jaunty but I'm not into downloading beta stuff as I'm not sure I am up to the challenge!

      Thanks for your informative reply.

Re: Attaching images to emails in Thunderbird (Kinda SOLVED)

Don't worry about the Beta aspect, I've installed the latest and have not found any show stoppers.
But I must say the KIPI plugins are in Gwenview not as complete as in KDE3.5.
Therefore I'm using Digikam for most of the editing and it works great.

          Hi.

Teunis - did you use this repo for getting the Beta?

          https://launchpad.net/~digikam-experimental/+archive/ppa

For some reason Synaptic wont load it!

Otherwise anywhere else it would be safe to download from?

          Many thanks.

I suggest to use the instructions on the Kubuntu site:
            http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2

            There is no https.

              Great stuff - thanks.

I've got the latest Digikam and the beta kipi-plugins - works like a dream (after a bit of faffing around)

              Thanks for the help Teunis.
