i tried to install the update for amarok today.when i opened the source code tab in adept installer and tried to put in the URL it wouldn't work so i quit out and tried to restart adept installer now it wont open at all can any one help i am new to linux I'm using kubuntu 8.10

I too had issues with that one. I reckon you can still go ahead installing stuff from the command line:
>> open a terminal/konsole
and do a

sudo apt-get install mypackage

where mypackage is the thing you want to install --- you go thru a password though.

If you want a GUI installer, install (if you do not have) SYNAPTIC as another choice --- it is quite a good graphical interface for package management, I think.

Can you paste the contents of your sources.list file here? It can be found at /etc/apt/sources.list. It sounds like something got corrupted.

when i put that in the terminal here is what it said. [ally@k:~$ /etc/apt/sources.list
bash: /etc/apt/sources.list: Permission denied] unless i done some thing wrong first time ever using linux

you need to put sudo infront of it.

Actually you could type "kate /etc/apt/sources.list" to have it open in kate.

This is true you just wont be able to edit it this way.

In a console window, you can just do

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

and then copy that, to post it here.

Note that you would have to use

kdesudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list

to be able to save any changes. This can also be run from the GUI command window that pops up when you do Alt-F2.

problem solved thanks for all the info. Is it possible to make a back up of the system files like the C/ drive in windows if so what do i use to do it thanks for all the help Kubuntu rocks
