How to change Icon of a file?

    Hi!

I'm trying to change icon for a specific File Type.

But the "icon button" on the "File Association" do not "exist".
When I click on the actual icon image (a question), do not open...

    What is the problem?

I'm new to this things... rsrsrsrs

    Maybe a security problem?
    Or something else?

    Thanks for any help.

I don't see a way to do it... I tried but cannot find a way to change the icon associated with a file type.

    Can you be more specific?

What kind of file are you trying to change? Where does it currently reside (file path)? What icon are you trying to change it to?

I can change the icon for desktop shortcuts and what-not... but seemingly not for files...

      Well...

I have files with the extension CBR and CBZ.
They are compressed files (RAR e ZIP), with images inside.

But the icon associate is a "?".
      I'd like to change that.

On the help I see that the way to change the icon is:

      1. Go to System Settings->Advanced->File Associations

      2. Find and select the extension

      3. Click on the icon and change it on the windows that pop up.

This is the problem... When I click the icon, nothing happens...
And I don't know if it's necessary root privilegies or how to get this...

Right click on one of those files and choose properties from the context menu.
In the general tab, click the button next to "Type".
You can then add/remove programs to open the file.
If you still want another icon, you can click the image for the file extension in this dialog and select another.

          Hi Johan,

This was the first thing I tried...

But when I tried, (and I tried again rsrs), nothing happens when I click the image for the file extension.
I tried with other icons too. The same result.

On this specific file, there are 3 programs on the list of the applications that can open this type of file:

          okular, comix and ark

I tried to delete comix and ark. Ok. Work. But when I click on the "apply", the two deleted applications came back to the list...

I think that this can be a problem with "permissions" maybe...
But I don't know how to have permission of root to execute the programs.

I tried executing Dolphin with sudo. Work well. But can't change icon yet.

The version of KDE that is running on my machine is 4.1.3 if it helps

Re: How to change Icon of a file?

Tried to change an icon myself today (I haven't got KDE4 installed yet, so I had to burn a LiveCD first).

Indeed, the icon for mimetypes is not clickable, and therefore not changeable in KDE4.1 as it was in KDE3... It appears not to be included in KDE4.2 also. Icons for applications are changeable, but that won't help you for the mimetype icons.

              Hum...

I see... Really, the apps I can change the icons...
I'll look around to find anything about this...

              Thanks, any way

I was looking on the Bug lists of KDE and found this:

                https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=158895

Seens that this option is disabled and only on version 4.3 is on again...

                Very sad...
