    Desktop effects with ATI card

My laptop has a HD 2600 ATI card in it, and when I went to enable the desktop effects my screen got all sorts of messed up and I had to go in from the command line and edit ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc and change the composite setting to disable to get it back to normal. What do I need to do to actually make this work?

I think that to enable desktop effects you need a proprietary driver from ATI that has not yet made its way to the official repositories.

      HX@Sphere:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
      direct rendering: Yes
      HX@Sphere:~$
You need to get direct rendering to have any real shot at desktop effects.

For me the fglrx driver from the restricted manager worked (on try #2. The restricted manager seems slightly flaky & took long & bombed out. But the direct rendering was ON after it bombed )

And finally: Google is your friend. Some of the ATI mobility laptops are having serious issues and the internet is bursting with threads about this.
