Does anyone know whether it's possible to set it so that a middle-click on the desktop shows the Applications menu? I really miss this from KDE3.x and I can't figure out how to do it in KDE4.

Get yourself the lancelot widget.
For lancelot and other plasmoids (thanky Rog):
Install with sudo apt-get, adept or synaptic (after a refresh)Add this to your repos:

Stick in your desktop, make it as large as you want and edit the setting to open on mouseover
