Not at all -- I'm just one of their (opinionated) victims ....

I prolly have a longer view of these things than the average Joe (plumber or not). I remember typing in the machine code for a word processor to run on my Commodore 64 ... which lasted until WordPerfect for DOS became available .... which remains a better word processor today than the crapola that came out of Redmond .... but we digress!

Expectations for a desktop environment are very high today, and that's a great thing, in my opinion. Anyway, since we don't pay the KDE devs anything for their efforts, I just try to cheer them along in their work. KDE 4 will get better, and the price will stay the same. Or Gnome, if you're of that persuasion -- same thing. Can't say the same for those other guys and their licenses.

I absolutely agree. Nevertheless, I truly believe the users should express more what they love/hate/expect in order to get a better Desktop (the feedback-loop is not really well deployed). I do know, that I don't pay a cent (however, my time is money, actually) for what I get and I appreciate that. In fact that is more or less the only reason why I promote Linux (and the Open Source reason).

I just think that self-adulation does not help in the end. I do think the users should point to the stinky areas in order to help the developers and the things I brought up do stink, I think.

Well, if the 'bugs' were faced with new features I would completly agree with you, but if it is with basic functions like file-handling (zip/encrypt/etc.) or menu-entries ordering or when upgrading keept the freakin' settings (keyboard shortcut) and so forth, I don't agree with you. That has nothing to do with a bleeding edge release (Linux has grown out of this 'wow, we can zipping files with a GUI-filemanager' stage, right?). I assumed that testing and fixing such issues is something that a developer should make sure (because those are basic functions) or at least the distributor (if not then in the end the distributor is redundant).

you know 8.04 is an LTS release so there is nothing stopping you for enjoying it for another three years It never once did anything unexpected for me - rock solid and dead reliable.

In the meantime let us others test the muddy waters of KDE4 so that by the time the next LTS release comes out you will be presented with a beautiful, fast and fully tested KDE4.

But above all, do not moan about it but enjoy the variety on offer and take your pick while others may prefer something different 8)

Well, I thought Kubuntu 8.04 is not a LTS release.

Anyway, I just tried to give some constructive (ok, with some emotions I admit) feedback and I still think that such basic things should not happen on an official and supported release, whether you call it an LTS release or not.

What we sometimes forget is that a distro is defined as a linux operating system with a certain set of options and defaults that the creator(s) deem to be sensible and sane. The good part is that if you don't care for something, you can change it. Now that doesn't mean it will be a simple, pointy-click situation, nor does it mean it will always be difficult either. Each distro has its own flavor, each one having its defaults to a different set of ideals and tastes. Not everyone is going to be pleased with everything any one distro, else every one would have the same old-school linux install with 6 gui text editors, 4 cli text editors, 3 terminal emulators, 5 web browsers, 3 email clients, and 7 kitchen sinks.

It is interesting to note that Kubuntu, Fedora and OpenSuse all have or will have KDE4 as the default KDE desktop within a few short months of each other. Obviously if the Average User tries any of these major distros, they will be getting KDE4, and it is also obvious that 3 different sets of distros think this is a good move to make

Now to quote the official Kubuntu release announcement, it is made quite clear that KDE4 might not be for everyone:

Today sees the release of Kubuntu 8.10 featuring the KDE 4 desktop. The Kubuntu developers have been hard at work, bringing you the latest and greatest software the open source community has to offer. KDE 4 reworks your system with a major new revision of the desktop.
This Intrepid release lives up to its name by including many changes, but there are some features that are not yet available in KDE 4. If you would rather stay with what you know then remember that Kubuntu 8.04 is still fully supported, see KDE3-KDE4Migration and Is KDE 4.1 for you? for more information on deciding. You can try it first with the Kubuntu Intrepid Live CD to see for yourself whether or not it really is "for you".

We do have choice and freedom. We can change or add to it, we can take it as it is, we can use a different distro, or even not use one at all. but that choice means there might be some amount of work involved.

In the case of Dolphin and Konqueror, KDE themselves have set Dolphin as the default file manager. As a matter of fact, Dolphin and Konqueror use the same underlying back-end in KDE4, much like Konq-kde3 uses khtml for web stuff and kfile (I think that is what it is called) for its file management backend.

• Zip,rar etc will be in KDE 4.2 till that time you could use http://kde-look.org/content/show.php...?content=84206 and if you also missing the service menus use http://kde-look.org/content/show.php...?content=80131
  
• You can change it by right click on folder and then change application order to konqueror. You also could do that in KDE3 to change the the file-manager you want to use.
