I just noticed that Synaptic does allow a proxy server to be configured so I guess I will use that, assuming it works OK. I can't understand why Adept doesn't have a similar feature. -

I just successfully made adept work behind a proxy with authentication.
You have to set the http_proxy variable in one of your init scripts. I did it in my homefolder/.kde/env/somescript.
just add http_proxy="http://username
assword@proxyiport".
restart kde and voila it works
