WiFi Doesn't Work Unless I Log into Gnome First

If I log into Gnome and connect to the Internet, my wireless strength shows 4 or 5 bars. If I log back out and then directly into KDE, I'm still connected to the Internet. The planet icon is green but shows no signal strength.

If I boot up and log directly into KDE first, the network manager will see my router but shows it as having a very weak signal and will time out when trying to connect - leaving me with a gray planet icon. What could the problem be? I've read a couple of other posts about wicd but cannot find it in the repositories.

wicd is in the universe repository. You may need to uncomment the line for universe in /etc/apt/sources.list, or in Kpackagekit->Settings->Edit Software Sources->Kubuntu Software make sure universe is checked. In fact, you might want to think about enabling all the repositories. Then find wicd in kpackagekit and install it, or do it the easy way.
    Run
    sudo aptitude update
    and
    sudo aptitude install wicd

Hmmm! I have a few problems. I'm running KDE 4.2.2 if that makes any difference.

      1. I don't have Kpackagekit, nor can I find it. I have Adept.
      2. When I click on sources.list, Software Sources pops up and Universe is already checked.
      3. When I run sudo aptitude update I get the following with an error for the launchpad ppa:

      Code:

you have a source in /etc/apt/sources.list that uses
          http://ppa.launchpad.net
Comment it with a # and update again.

Re: WiFi Doesn't Work Unless I Log into Gnome First

I've tried commenting it with Kate, Text Editor and Mousepad. None will give me permission to save it. I've tried to change the permissions of the file under "properties" but it won't let me. Under "advanced permissions", same thing. I'm unable to choose anything.

I notice that user and group are both root. I was never asked for a password. Should I be doing this from the command line? If so, how?

Thanks!!!! I'm going to try rebooting directly into KDE. Both wicd and Kpackagekit were installed!
