Preferred File System Type For 8.10

Is there a preferred file system for the next Kubuntu. I am now using Kubuntu 8.04 and my one complaint is the ext3 file system on every twenty boots or so wants run a fsck which can take a long time. Granted I can elect to kill the file system check, but in the future I hope to use a file system that avoids this completely.

What about JFS and XFS file systems are these on par with ext3. Any recommendations appreciated.

ext3 really is the official recommendation. The fsck every 30 boots is for your protection.

I set up a Kubuntu system on xfs about a year ago. But after some months, my large VMWare virtual disk started showing scary signs of flakiness, so I went back to ext3 for the sake of data security. I still have a couple of my data partitions formatted xfs, but not for the Linux filesystem.

I have my sidux Linux system on a jfs partition, just for experimentation. It seems fine, so far (about 2 months so far). But all the official recommendations you can find seem to go for ext3, so the others are at your risk.

By the way, there is a way to set the ext3 check interval to some longer interval than 30 boots -- I think the command is tune2fs -- Google it and see what you can learn.

ext4 should be a lot faster to fsck than ext3, according to benchmarks I've seen (which I always take with a pinch of salt)

Although ext4 may not be ready for prime time in Ibex, it's possibly ready to be supported as an (educated) choice.

Huh -- I did not notice an ext4 option when I installed II, but I might have missed it. Perhaps I'll have to reinstall when the official release comes out.

        Also, note this:

For people who are running Ubuntu

For people who are running Ubuntu, it is *highly* recommended that you download a set of modified util-linux packages and install them. Packages for Ubuntu Hardy are available here. These packages revert a change made by Ubuntu to use the volid library instead of the blkid library. The volid library has a number of shortcomings, including that they don't work on freshly created filesystems or swap devices until after you reboot (since it is tied to udev probing) and the volid library doesn't understand ext4dev filesystems. The blkid library is much better, and Debian uses the blkid library for util-linux. Unfortunately, Ubuntu chose to make this reason for some unknown reason. For other versions of Ubuntu, the patch that was applied can be found here {link to dead page}.

I doubt it's there yet, and it might not be even in the release (and even if it was, I'm not sure that it would be the right choice for anyone who appreciates data integrity)

Yep, looks pretty experimental, especially for *buntu folk. :P

I thought we were more cavalier than others with our 6 month release cycle especially if you compare us to our Debian cousins.

Yeah, but hopefully not so cavalier as to offer a known-buggy filesystem choice -- those links indicate the devs are still finding and fixing fairly serious bugs in ext4. I don't think it's ready for Joe User quite yet, according to what I read there.

Our discussion got me thinking we could have a new section in the sources file

What about ReiserFS? I have used it for years, and have not had any trouble with it. I seems faster than Ext3.

I have used reiser for years as well without any issues, and it is fast. I am now trying ext3 with my latest installation and it seems the same - haven't noticed the change. I saw a detailed analysis of the performance of various filesystems and ext3 and reiser were on a par, with each excelling somewhat in different areas (many small files versus large files, etc.) Reading the analysis I couldn't decide which was better. Unless you're splitting hairs I think the functionality and stability is equivalent.

Not sure if reiser is still in development though, whereas ext seems to be.
