Nvidia and/or kernel with sound issue: I hope this helps

Hey, I followed 'dibl's' Nvidia install notes (binary driver) and it works. But, sound is removed. I also learned (or it's a theory, at least), that upgrading the kernel version will also remove sound. Well, this applies to me at least and I have an Audigy 2ZS sound card.

Note: it might be kernel specific, in this case: 2.6.27-11-generic

I found a solution, though. If anyone ever has a similar problem, try this:

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/310179

Running alsamixer and muting that Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack setting does the trick.

I am not sure but perhaps, the kernel module 'change' or something to do with the kernel is modified when you install a new(er) Nvidia driver? Perhaps, that is not the right explanation but I don't think it has to do with the driver itself but maybe a kernel module but I think it is kernel-related. It's a bug of some sort, right? 'Gotta be... Sound shouldn't be modified whenever you do anything like that. It shouldn't effect an ALSA setting. Right? I am just glad that running alsamixer does allow a fix.

If you run into the same problem, try that procedure and see if it helps.
