Opera browser crashes very often, Firefox works normally---why?

I recently installed 8.04 on this partition and am having very frequent Opera crashes, many times a day. I've reinstalled Opera and checked the Opera forums without result so far. Firefox works normally, but I want my Opera!

Does anyone have suggestions about where I could look for answers?

I have only a few crashes usually on sites using java applets written for IE. Then its usually when I try to close a page thats hanging up.

I've tried starting Opera from the command line to see how it crashes:

      ---------------
ASSERT: "cr < NColorRoles" in file kernel/qpalette.cpp, line 735
      opera [crash logging]: CRASH!!
/usr/lib/opera/opera got signal SIGABRT at address B7748410

      Log was created here:
      /var/tmp/crash20100704205714.txt

      [1]+ Killed opera
      ---------------

but there's no file under /var/tmp. Any ideas would be welcome!

Did you post the error message on the Opera forum? The error is clearly VERY specific to Opera. It lists a particular line of Opera code. If they don't know what's going on, nobody does. Apropos of which, is the Opera code, open? If it isn't, nobody outside of Opera knows what's going on.
