and by the way turning off the sound system shouldn't turn off sound.

- alas use nano or kate, but in a terminal type example:sudo kate /boot/grub/menu.lst

- then the next time u reboot, it will reboot automatically into the working kernel that doesn't have problems with your soundcard, etc.. so that way you won't have to press esc at the command prompt, etc..
