Shortly after my post to this thread I took an update. Now I notice checkboxes rendering in Gmail. I have not checked other apps. Maybe it has been fixed?

Nope - changing the scheme does not effect either.

same problem in firefox and compiz-manager, using domino style in kde3.5 kubuntu8.10 (I don't like qtcurve)

Also, not sure if its part of the same problem get very flakey mouse responses eg triple click no line select, click in a position and the cursor goes crazy.
When I click a message in Thunderbird sometimes it just moves all the lines and does not select the desired item.
