KDE4 on Hardy Alpha3 not installed

I just did a clean install of alpha3 and was surprised to see KDE4 not installed. In fact, if I try to add KDE4 it lists it as an item that will break...

Any thoughts? I had assumed that it would have been the default as its the only thing mentioned in this release....

KDE 4 will not be a default desktop even in final release of Hardy, AFAIK.

On August 29th, 2007, Jono Bacon announced the next release, version 8.04, codenamed the Hardy Heron, on the [WWW] Ubuntu Developer Announce mailing list.

It was recently [WWW] announced that Kubuntu 8.04 will not be an LTS release. Due to this news, the goals for the release have been revised, with more effort focused on the newly released KDE 4.0. Kubuntu Hardy will now ship two CDs: one with KDE 3.5, supported for the standard 18 months, and one with KDE 4.0, supported by the community for 6 months. Users upgrading from Kubuntu Gutsy will get the KDE 3.5 desktop.

The focus for 8.04 with KDE 3.5 for the Kubuntu community will be stability. Alpha 3, the third in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Hardy development cycle, represent the very latest snapshots of Hardy. The pre-release images are known to be reasonably free of CD-build or installer bugs, however they are not recommended for use in stable environments. These releases will be for those who are developing, documenting, and testing.

To install kde4 try looking for kde4 in adept or synaptic and install: kde4-core after that logout and choose kde4 at login you can then install ather kde4 apps as needed.

Well here is how I did it courtesy of the Kubuntu news page at http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0php

Instructions:

* Remove previous KDE 4 packages, they are not compatible (apt-get remove kdelibs5 kde4base-data kde4libs-data)
* Add deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main to your /etc/apt/sources.list
* Install kde4-core, note that PPAs aren't authenticated so you will likely get a warning when installing
* KDE 4 apps should appear in your KDE 3 K-menu or you can run a full session by selecting "KDE 4" from your login manager.
* To avoid having to start a second X server for a full session install xserver-xephyr and run Xephyr :1 then and run /usr/lib/kde4/bin/startkde in the Xerphyr xterm.

I tested KDE4 yesterday and this morning, and am of the impression that it is a *very* *good* *thing* that it won't be the default in Hardy. I just don't think it can be in the appropriate state before Hardy is released.

Here's what I remember:

1) WOW... oxygen looks realllllly awesome! I thought the default settings for previous desktops were pretty ugly compared to OSX and Vista, but this one's actually to my liking.

2) (5 minutes later) Ummmm.... how do I configure half this stuff? Uh oh... looks like they put the feature-freeze in place before they implemented ways to add panels and such.

3) Even though I installed all the available screensaver packages, "Blank" is the only one in the list... and it won't work (some error saying 'no appropriate greeter configured', or something like that, appears when you try to lock the screen). Did a search and saw others with the same problem - no solutions.

4) Started customizing the new desktop as best I could... The new KNewsTicker is missing most functionality (like being able to resize and change the colors) and creates graphics glitches outside its own window. I was under the impression that the plasmoids would make SuperKaramba unnecessary, but the sparse list and results leave me not feeling it so far.

5) Icons were missing for a lot of KDE4 apps (dolphin, systemsettings...) for some reason. I manually fixed several of the big offenders with the menu editor... I wonder why they weren't correct by default?

6) The advanced desktop effects are cool, but I want a cube. The pager applet flickers in and out of existence while typing in some windows....

7) Shutting down the system lets you choose to Power Down, Reboot, Logout, etc.... but clicking any of them leads you to another dialog where the only option is to log out. Maybe this is a side effect of using KDE3's KDM?

8) Installed and tried to use KDE4's KDM. Couldn't get it to launch to the desktop due to "critical errors". Reading it's log shed no light whatsoever as to what the problem was. Uninstalled. Had to manually edit /etc/init.d/kdm to get it to launch, since it complained it was no longer the default session manager.

9) The new Kopete would not show contact pictures (at least for the one contact I saw online on MSN), even when configured to do so.

10) I fired up CounterStrike:Source under Wine and when it went fullscreen it caused the new KWin to crash - something that doesn't happen under 3.5. CS:S kept running though. For some reason, most of the colors in the game were fubared - another thing that doesn't happen in 3.5 (though it could be due to an undiscovered Wine bug with pixel formats).

11) The "Menu Editor KDE4" would not work for me. The normal "Menu Editor" would though. I didn't try to run the first from a command line to troubleshoot.

And those are just some of the items I can recall off the top of my head. I don't think they should have put the feature freeze in place at the time they did; It's still not a viable desktop for anyone except those developing it (or KDE4 apps), at this point.

My hat's off to them for all their hard work though - I'll definitely be checking it out as I see new packages come down. I guess I should do my part too and go make sure everything I found has an existing bug-report, and add it if not.

KDE 4.0 - The "Let Mikey try it. He'll try anything!" 'Alpha' (touted as 'Final') release of 'software in testing'. Sorry guys, but one has to call a spade a spade, and KDE 4.0 is not ready for prime time!

So... looks like I am the only one to like it so far! (Typical woman, likes all the eye candy!) I wonder if some of the probs are caused by having the two versions almost running together. I love the desktop effects (see told you!) and have mine set so that when I close a window it breaks into little pieces, frightened me the first time it happened, I wondered what was going on.

Yes there aren't a lot of Widgets so far, but more will arrive. I can't get the weather one to install, Adept says it will break so am not bothering for now.

Nope. They're completely separate, saving their settings in separate directories and having entirely separate packages for the apps. The problems are just (as of yet) unresolved bugs.

I would probably like it more, if I didn't have Compiz and all the pretty eye candy already working under 3.5 on Hardy. As is, I do nothing but lose features/stability when I choose to login with the 4.0 desktop.

you can run compiz very nicely under kde4

Yep, I found Compiz worked very well under KDE4.
