oops Error Line 15 after installing updates

Ok it was really stupid to do as newbie did the distribution upgrade to Hardy Heron (no cd) all was working ok backed up tons of data to home folder, downloaded some updates, rebooted

now get greeted with 'Error Line 15, press any key' unable to boot in recovery mode etc, just used my 7.10 cd to boot into live environment.

Can anyone help out a newbie to fix the problem, or least tell me how to get to the 50GB of data so i can back up to another device on the network ?
