repository problem "index files failed to download"

I am having a few glitches with my system and thought I had better deal with the ones that I am aware of first.

I am getting the following message when I update synaptic:

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/Release Unable to find expected entry hardy/binary-amd64/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I can't seem to access the repo to edit it as I have looked in the repos of adept and synaptic.

I would try a different repository. I just started up my Hardy machine and I'm downloading a bunch (~60) updates. It's been a while since I ran Hardy. It's a slow upgrade, but it's happening.

I suggest that you find a nearby, obscure repository in the Synaptic "download from" list and give it a shot. Do not use Canonical and do not use the standard national repository! I assume you're aware that the repos are fairly busy today.
