I think this is what is happening. The screen goes to black (except the backlight is still on), ctrl-alt-backspace terminates the lcd backlight, but does not bring up a screen. ctrl-alt-f1 brings the terminal up with three "can't open display" warnings. Going to init 1 and then back up to kdm doesn't seem to work either... only a reboot.
