    No KDE after updates as of 15 Oct 2008 [SOLVED]

    I am on Kubuntu 8.04 and a few days ago I have installed KDE 4.1.2 alongside my existing KDE 3. It worked just fine, I was able to log on either choosing new KDE 4.1.2. or the old one. Yesterday, a couple of updates were installed requiring reboot. For some reason I had a feeling that something wrong was going on. And indeed, when booting, KDE will not start. I get messages like this :

    kinit: name_to_deb_t (/dev/disk/by-uuid/2c9aa696y sigue...
    kinit: trying to resume from /dev/disk/by-uuid/2c.... y sigue
    kinit: No resume image, doing normal boot...

    and I can only log on via terminal. I have found a similar problem on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...33#post5971533 .

    Any ideas what to do ?

    Problem solved. This is what I have done :

    1. sudo swapoff /dev/sda5
    where /dev/sda5 is my swap partition
    $ sudo mkswap /dev/sda5
    $ sudo update-initramfs -u

    That solved the kinit error. But after the reboot I would still not get KDE automatically.

    2. sudo apt-get remove kubuntu-desktop

    3. sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

    Still no help.

    4. sudo kdm

    It would show some error first but KDE 3 would start.

    5. I have reinstalled kubuntu-kde4-desktop package. But it is not working properly. I can not move windows for example (firefox is showing only in one quarter of the screen and can not be extended). Also keyboard is not working in terminal. Anyway, I can now log in KDE 3 without issues.

      Re: No KDE after updates as of 15 Oct 2008 [SOLVED]

      And my KDE 4 is back again up and perfectly running as well now. I have noticed that /etc/X11/xorg.conf file was updated yesterday by the updates while a backup was created. So I just put back the back up file from yesterday and KDE 4 is back which I am quite happy of, since I like KDE 4.

      Hope my experience will help someone.
