KDE4-no panel(?)

I recently decided to try out KDE4, so I installed it alongside KDE3.5.9.
As of now, I have KDE4.0.

I've noticed that my panel/taskbar (I can't remember exactly what you call it; the line usually located at the bottom of the screen where tasks go when minimized) is gone! I can add a task manager, but all this does is add a small widget that displays the current task, that is, it's too small to work with. How might I get the full panel back? Also, should I go ahead and get KDE4.1.1? If so, how?

I had to spend some time googling variations of +remove +ugly +black +thing +panel +kde4 before i thankfully found the answer.

You should be able to r/click the desktop ->Add Widget and select Panel.

Best thing to do here is upgrade to 4.1, where the panel (though far from perfect) is much more reliable. Adding a panel is as simple as right-clicking on the desktop and choosing "Add panel" (though it annoyingly defaults to the top of the screen). Resizing the panel and moving elements on it is much easier in 4.1 than in 4.0

Depending on exactly what you're looking for from your panel though, you may well be able to get along happily without it. For example, you should be able to resize your task manager widget to any length you want grab the extender icon in the handle that appears when you mouseover it and resize as you would a window. Just about anything that can be added to a panel can be added straight to your desktop, though this does mean that windows will cover them.

You may need to choose "Unlock widgets" after clicking on the cashew in the top right to be able to add or change them.

Yet another way to do it (one of my favourites ) is to boot into 3.5.10, then delete the .kde4 directory.

It will simply create a new one when you log back in.

My KDE4.0 only lets me change the magnification of the Task Manager...

I think I may uninstall my KDE4, and then reinstall it using the directions above...(a couple of the steps don't look familiar. It's possible that I installed KDE4 incorrectly.)

But it will not re-create your email, bookmarks, etc. that are stored there. RENAME your .kde folder to something else, don't delete!!!

KDE4 said I had updated packages available, so I began to download them. However, included was a kernel update.

I do not want to update the kernel, as I'm afraid I might lose all my specially configured and/or built drivers (such as madwifi). Is this something I need to worry about?

True. I forget that not everyone keeps such things on another drive....

The kernel upgrade has nothing to do with KDE, so you can just unselect it in the adept preview-changes list after you click "Upgrade All" (assuming it's adept you're using for package management). The kernel update just appeared yesterday, I think.
