2.6.24-23 kernel booting error (2.6.24-22 still OK)

Kubuntu 8.04 / KDE 3.5.10 (all normal, legal updates, no 'alternate'/'mix'/etc attempts ever

    From /var/log/kdm.log :

Current Operating System: Linux franux 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 01:04:16 UTC 2009 x86_64

    Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Luckily I can still boot perfectly on the previous kernel: 2.6.24-22, but always nice to have the latest!
Also, willing to go KDE 4.2 if now recommended / easy, including nvidia driver OK
(but now at least I can fall back on KDE 3 with previous kernel when a problem such at this occurs, hence afraid of new KDE 4 / new kernels with KDM not starting)

    Thanks

Perhaps the problem had not been resolved since. I am on 2.6.28-14 kernel and having updated from 2.6.28-11, Kubuntu boots into a black screen. A few interesting observations:
    1. 2.6.28-11 worked fine
    2. kernel update reset NVIDIA driver support
    3. after booting through safe mode and repairing broken packages seems to work, but NVIDIA driver gets wiped
    4. Kubuntu (with new kernel) would not boot unless (!) battery is charged to 100% and power supply plugged in.
    5. BIOS fault #81 occured after update, I had to violate my laptop by uploading M$ Vi$ta on it and flashing my bios. That did not work. Although, "pnpbios=off" did!

a number of people reported similar problems, is it worth reporting as a bug?

    Any ideas?

Updating to 2.6.28-15 did not solve these problems. To turn my laptop on takes between 20 and 30 minutes, yet I do not exclude hardware problems. Although, Vi$ta works fine.
