    upgrade 8.04 --> 8.10 prob

    I did the upgrade like in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...grades/Kubuntu but now when the system has restarted I only get a command line to log in. KDE does not start up automaticcally like in previous version 8.04 ( i installed 8.04 from cd begin of the month)

    When you boot what grub options are displayed?

    Does it list a few options, such as 2.6.27-7 generic and 2.6.24-21
    i686, memory test?

    Log in as root at the prompt, type your first user password.
    Look also at /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if there
    is a problem starting kdm.

    Type kdm and see what happes, there may be an error message. Have you
    edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf or do you have an exotic video card?

    In /etc/X11 you should have xorg.conf.old or xorg.conf.dddddd (date)
    you can change the name of the current xorg.conf to xorg.conf.xyz
    then the xorg.conf.dddddd to xorg.conf and reboot to see if that works.
    If not, no harm done, change the files back. The xorg log should give
    some reasons why it's not starting.
