Problem using amd64 alternate CD upgrade to 8.04 LTS

Because the official server is dog-slow at the moment, I thought I'd be a responsible netizen and download the alternate install CD-ROM from one of the mirrors. I then followed the first option in the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades/Kubuntu. The installer first asks if I want to install updates from the net. Saying "yes" seems to kick it into download-everything mode (i.e., slowww), so I aborted and attempted to do the upgrade using only the CD-ROM files. Everything looks fast, but then it reports that it can't authenticate a huge long list of packages and aborts before I'm even prompted to begin the real installation phase.

Am I doing something dumb here or is this a real issue? This is the amd64 alternate CD, and I'm starting from a Gutsy install that's been pretty regularly updated.

I'm experiencing the same problem. like you , i chose not to upgrade from the net but rather from the alternate CD (AMD64 destop) and sure enough, i'm getting an error that the upgrade process cannot authenticate the upgrade, thus closing.

Is there a resolution for that ?

No resolution of the problem for me, but the slow net install has finally finished. Now to figure out why it broke my wireless...

i think i know what the problem is. since i have an nvidia card, i installed Envy for the card's drivers. on the Envy web site it is said that when upgrading to a newer version of xUbuntu you have to uninstall it .

i'm removing it now and will see if this works...

.... and.... now KDE won't start. way to go Kubuntu !!! >
i'm getting tired of this all. as much as i hate windows, i just can't stand all this hard time making Linux to work.

        so now what ?

So the best way is not to upgrade that frequently.

Just use a single version until you change your computer.

this is one way of looking at it but with my history of staying with old computers, i won't do any upgrades until Kubuntu Ver. 11

Any way, i got KDE to start again, Envy and the nvidia driver still installed, and this is the error i get when i try to upgrade using the alternate cd :

My guess : the envy installer and the nvidia restricted drivers...
