When I boot from the cd the monitor turns off. I can click run kubuntu live... but then the monitor turns off. Then comes back on when it is on desktop. Because of that I cant install it. I have GeForce 8600GT

Yes, the 8000-series Nvidia cards are tricky to get started -- here are a couple of links that may help you get past that annoying little feature:

If I'm reading the OP post correctly, the bootable CD itself isn't presenting the GUI -- so it won't be possible to change the kernel boot entry that way, until he can get the system installed on his hard drive.Originally posted by DetonateEdit your grub menu.lst.

Is there a "Safe Graphics Mode", or an opportunity to press F6 on that initial menu for the Alternate CD? I used the Alternate CD to install my Hardy Heron Alpha 5, and somehow I got past the issue with the 8000-series Nvidia card not wanting to present the display, but I don't remember exactly what I did 3 or 4 weeks ago. :P

Ahh -- no, I think maybe I didn't realize that he'd got it installed on the hard drive. My badOriginally posted by DetonateWell, I thought he had installed Kubuntu using the alternate CD. But did not see all the boot up info when booting. Did I misunderstand his most recent post?
