    External Drive unmounts automatically

    I have a 500 GB external USB hard drive in my desktop pc. I've noticed that after working for some time, it automatically unmounts. Why is this happening? What can i do?

    We need more info. Could you run this command

    dmesg|tail
    straight after it happens and post the output.

      Check your energy saving options in the BIOS. I had a similar problem, which turned out to be the USB port being pewered down to preserve energy. Now, I turn off all that energy saving crap.
