    CD / DVD reading problem

After updating to 2.6.24-14 kernel, I've had the following problem (not sure if it came earlier, and I can't boot the system with the previous kernel to find out :/)

When I insert a CD or DVD to my DVD drive, I normally get the popup asking what I want to do (open it etc.). Then I open it in Konqueror, and I can see all the files normally. But when I try to open any of the files, I get an error saying "unable to read file" etc.

After trying things for a while, I was able to read contents of a CD by manually mounting it. But couldn't do the same with DVDs. (but it's still quite inconvenient to manually mount it, since there was no need for that earlier)

And also suddenly I don't have /dev/hdc in my system and it's renamed /dev/scd0 , and it doesn't work with audio CDs nor video DVDs. (it works when mounting a CD though)

So, does anyone know how to fix this? I've been trying to search for an answer for a while,

Maybe: Multimedia Problem: Maybe you don't have enough rights...(e.g: no disc in drive)

Well, now xine just freezes when I try to play a dvd. And with VLC I still get the following
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10 from http://dvd.sf.net
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
      libdvdnav: DVD Title: DVDVolume
      libdvdnav: DVD Serial Number: c50d50ce

[00000306] cdda access error: could not read block 2 from disc
[00000306] cdda access error: cannot read sector 2
And when I insert a normal DVD, I get the following error when opening it in new window:
mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog -try dmesg | tail or so
EDIT: When trying to mount it manually with sudo mount -t udf /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0, I get the same error.

And the output from dmesg | tail is

And the output from ls -l /dev/dvd*

      lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2008-04-09 19:54 /dev/dvdrw1 -> scd0
EDIT: And now data CDs work normally, but I'm unable to listen to audio CDs :/

I think that the new driver is not working with your hardware :
[40204.907709] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Logical unit communication CRC error (Ultra-DMA/32)
        Here:
        Code:
        dmesg | grep sr
        tells:
[ 29.197994] Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods
        [ 29.216515] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
        [ 29.216581] sr 3:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
        [ 29.224914] sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 32x/32x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
        [ 29.224978] sr 3:0:1:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1

        There are bug reports:

CDROM drive no longer working, unable to mount.

Re: CD / DVD reading problem

Well, I have to hope they get it fixed or switch back to debian :/

Or possibly buy a DVD burner that works properly in linux. Any suggestions? (I've had problems in not getting DMA working with my DVD drive for ages anyway)

Re: CD / DVD reading problem

This issue is happening with Debian also. I've spent all day searching for a fix, but I don't find one. What is happening is that mplayer, totem, vlc and and the whole linux system aren't recognizing a USA DVD as valid - they show no disk.

An old USA disk - perhaps 8 years old - plays - it is a commercial movie.

No one has gotten the fix yet - or I haven't found it - and I don't know where the problem is - unless it is libdvdcss and where do you go to report a bug with that?

All the players from vlc to ogle don't work.
