I need it to support a printer I want to buy. Or do I have to (should I) upgrade to something? If so, to what?

I have hplip 2.8.2 ...ok I run hardy but I had it before I am sure with gutsy as well then. it is really very useful as I could not use my old printer that well before ..an hp deskjet 1300.
What printer are you looking to support?
