    Adept: There was an error commiting changes

    During an update I get the following message:

    "There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages."

    I cannot find any error message in the dpkg.log, and that makes this message a mysterious one.
    It happens during all adept actions, install, remove and update

    What does it mean? Has anyone else seen such a message?

    Usually, using Synaptic instead of Adept solves such problems.

    $ sudo apt-get install synaptic

    Then run Synaptic, click Reload, then Mark All Upgrades and Apply. I won't download the packages you already have in cache (downloded with Adept), only install them.

    If you get a message about broken packages after pressing the Mark Upgrades button, first reinstall the broken packages (in Synaptic go Status => Broken on the left side of the screen). Then repeat the whole process.

        Thanks, was having a lot of trouble with Adept but Synaptic seems to work much better

          That problem with adept is very easy to solve just run
          sudo dpkg --configure -a
          and it should stop appearing. That error message is weird because even when adept tells you that it still installs all the packages fine.

            It didn't seem to install the packages fine though, it's only since using synaptic that I've got sound and other issues resolved.
