Here's a list of free FPSes, many of which are for Linux. Wine keeps a list of games with entries in the AppDB here, which has several subcategories.

And, of course, Google is your friend.

http://www.linux-gamers.net/ is a good resource as well. They have a stems/hl/cs how-to that is pretty thorough.

Definitely, in terms of wine and games, search here and other forums to see what problem areas others have had. Steam is relatively easy to install and run using wine, but there are always possible problem areas.
