    What codecs do I need

Just installed Gutsy. It seems the codec packages have changed again for this release. On feisty I used to install libxine-extracodecs but this doesn't seem to be showing. I also used to install libdvdread and win32codecs.

What packages do I need with Gutsy to enable mp3,dvd and video playback?

    thanks

Re: What codecs do I need

    Maybe this:

    http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/met...tricted-extras
    Package: kubuntu-restricted-extras (10) [multiverse]
    Commonly used restricted packages

This package depends on some commonly used packages in the Kubuntu multiverse repository.

Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding, Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, DVD playback, and LAME (to create compressed audio files).

Please note that packages from multiverse are restricted by copyright or legal issues in some countries. See http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/licensing for more information.

No, you need to install w32codecs (some players could have support build in).

libxine1-ffmpeg is the kind of replacement for libxine-extracodecs

Re: What codecs do I need

            Hmm - kubuntu-restricted-extras recommends:

            flashplugin-nonfree [i386]
            Adobe Flash Player plugin installer

            libdvdread3
            library for reading DVDs

            libk3b2-mp3
The KDE cd burning application library - MP3 decoder

            liblame0
            LAME Ain't an MP3 Encoder

            libtunepimp5-mp3
MP3 Plugin for MusicBrainz tagging library

            libxine1-ffmpeg
            mpeg related plugins for libxine1

            sun-java6-jre [amd64]
Sun Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (architecture independent files)

            sun-java6-plugin [i386]
            The Java(TM) Plug-in, Java SE 6

            unrar
Unarchiver for .rar files (non-free version)

            Note#1
            You can install single packages.

            Note#2
For cd ripping (mp3) you need lame + liblame0. More:
