Maybe a few more details about your hardware would help. Are you using a router? If so are your ports forwarded correctly? Are you trying to ftp / http into your computer that is running Kubuntu or are you going the other way? What ftp program are you running? Etc.

    Thanks,
    Mike

      Re: ftp but can't http

      ok sry,

Connecting using a Sierra Wireless Aircard 595U, not a router. Set up the connection using kppp.

Also, I can ping www.google.com but not http://www.google.com

I think i've had this issue with other distro's but it has been so long since I have touched linux, I don't know where http lives.

I am using Konqueror as it was only browser with kde. ftp on Konqueror is fine. I ping in terminal of course.

        Re: ftp but can't http

Unfortunately, I have not worked with wireless cards so I really have no idea how to help. I thought it may be a router problem but since you are not using one I can not even guess. I'm fairly new to Kubuntu so my knowledge is limited. Someone here in this forum can help. Keep searching.

          There is this from google:

            Re: ftp but can't http

OK just to clarify again, I did get the card working initially—http and all.

But after I messed with the WiFi fixes as described here; my http ability is gone.
            https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MacBookPro

Is there a file I should be checking to see why the http protocol is not working?
Is my system looking for some sort of http proxy?

What you describe here is normal behavior. ping tries to resolve the entire string as a host. The "http://" portion is not a part of a host name, but rather is a declaration of the protocol used. I tried the same thing on my machine:
              Code:
              john@john-laptop:~/Documents$ ping [url]www.google.com[/url]
              PING [url]www.l.google.com[/url] (209.85.165.147) 56(84) bytes of data.
              64 bytes from eo-in-f147.google.com (209.85.165.147): icmp_seq=1 ttl=230 time=71.2 ms
              64 bytes from eo-in-f147.google.com (209.85.165.147): icmp_seq=2 ttl=230 time=79.5 ms
              64 bytes from eo-in-f147.google.com (209.85.165.147): icmp_seq=3 ttl=230 time=72.4 ms
              64 bytes from eo-in-f147.google.com (209.85.165.147): icmp_seq=4 ttl=230 time=70.0 ms

              --- [url]www.l.google.com[/url] ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 2998ms
              rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 70.008/73.313/79.541/3.713 ms
              john@john-laptop:~/Documents$ ping [url]http://www.google.com[/url]
              ping: unknown host [url]http://www.google.com[/url]
As for the rest, there is a place where the action for "http" and "https" can be configured within KDE. That would be System -> KDE Control Center -> KDE Components. If that's not it, then I don't know.

                http://www.evdoforums.com/thread6542.html

Here is some interesting reading. It seems that some carriers (sprint in the case above) have had issues with port 80.

                Helpful info:

http:// is carried across port 80
ftp:// is carried across port 21
https:// is carried across port 443

Were you able to access the ubuntu wiki concerning the MacBookPro? Available here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MacBookPro
