Start Menu glitch and chopiness problem

I just installed Kubuntu 7.10 on a laptop, some of the "Kmenu" entries are messed up. I included a pic to illustrate this. This did not occur when booting with the liveCD.

Also, for some reason, intermentedly, Kubuntu goes choppy. This seems to happen for no reason, though it often happens when a new dialog box is open.

The laptop is a 2003 Dell Latitude C810. It had a Nvidia portable graphics card, a Pentium III portable processor, 512 MB of ram, a 30 GB hardrive, removable floppy drive, intergrated cd drive, ethernet and phone ports, and an empty slot for a wireless card, which litteraly melted itself during the time the previous owner had it.

Any ideas how to fix these?
