    KUbuntu wont complete installation

    Hi there

This is all new to me so sorry if this is daft!

Tried to install Kubunu onto my Dell. Goes through the whole process of setup but then it hangs up at 15% installation. Mouse wont work either so cannot skip that point. Tried several times but it just wont complete the installation or go any further

    HELP!!!

I assume you have LIVE CD, if that's the case when it loads don't enter kubuntu installation but go on
check CD for errors, i got a few CD's with errors before I successfully intalled Kubuntu.
I'm magnet for errors, problems and bugs...

Also try reburning the cd at less than x8. This as been a major hiccup at times and depends on the media.

        Re: KUbuntu wont complete installation

I have a similar problem. I have a live CD from Canonical. The live part works just fine. However, I tried to install it this afternoon, and I think the installation goes off into never never land.

I get as far as answering the questions about language, keyboard, partioning, time zone, and then it starts the installation process. It seems to launch itself without having to punch the "install" button" because a couple of notices are produced saying "installing apt" and "installing language", but when it gets to "installing system" thats when the nothing starts to happen. The hard drive activity weakly blinks, but no progress seems to be made.

The first time I tried to install I pushed the restart button after 90 minutes. The second time I let it go for close to three hours. Can it really take more than three hours to install? Do I have a bad disc?

        Thank you.

The most probable problem is your video card. When booted from the LiveCD, and on the desktop, and you choose to Install, when at the initial screen, press the F4 key to boot using Safe Graphics mode (VGA). This should permit the process to continue (not always, but a lot of the time). IF this does work for you, then after installation, you can work on getting your video card properly loaded and configured. Is your video card an ATI by chance?

            SnowHog,

I have a XFX nVidia video card.

I tried installing again this morning, but the same thing happened as twice before. Nothing. At least I think it's nothing. I find it hard to believe that it takes more than two hours to install. Once the "installing system" panel is displayed all that happens is that the hard drive activity blinks occasionally. The live CD form works just fine.

You didn't indicate, so, did you try using the Safe Graphics (VGA) option on the install menu (F4)?

                  SnowHog,

I believe I was in the safe video mode. How long should it take for the 7.1 version to install?

A lot faster than you are reporting. There is something else going on that is preventing the process from completing. What are your system specifications?

                      SnowHog,

The machine I am using for the Kubuntu has an ECS motherboard, XFX Force video card, and AMD CPU, and a Maxtor hard drive. These components are two to three years old each.

Is it an optiplex by any chance? I had the same with mine, so i just left it. May i suggest updating your system BIOS, getting more ram (1gb is optimal), and maybe freeing some hard drive space.

                          SnowHog,

Thanks for the help. It took four tries and using your video suggestion to get it to install.

Does this mean that you were successful? You got it to install completely?
