Before I install on new hard drive, what version do I need?

I am putting in hard drive in a tower that has all the bells and whistles but no hard drive. I just want to know what to download. I get that Amd 64 and i.386 are referring to the processor. But what is the meaning of .iso; .iso.torrent; .jigdo; .template etc... ?

What do I download to install kubuntu on a brand new hard drive?

I have done this before with windows. I feel fairly comfortable with most of it. I assume that .iso is the main installation. I just don't want to screw it up. Thanks.

Unless you are using a torrent, you just want to download the .ISO.

Once you have downloaded the ISO, you will need to burn the ISO image to a blank CD-R with a program like K3B.

AMD64 is for 64 bit systems and the 386 software is for a 32 bit system, this is regardless of manufacturer.
Because there are more issues to get certain drivers and utilities in 64 bit your best bet is to stay with the 386 version unless you really know what it's about.

These .iso files are to be burned on a disk as an image, not just copied.
It is only from this disk you can access the content and commence installing.

'Screwing' it is no big deal, once you've got the partitioning of the hard disk done a new install is only 20-30 minutes away.

Good luck and lots of fun!

I found this little tool a short time ago.

        http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

It adds support directly into windows for burning .iso images to CD. It worked great for me on the Kubuntu Alternate CD a couple weeks ago.

Once it's installed, simply right click on your .iso file and select the option to burn the image to a CD.

It is a very light weight, straight forward tool to use.
