    Hung install

    Have dell dimension 2100(or demented 2100 if you like) given to me. Mukey soft choked on me so I am in midst of installing 7.10 . It seems to have hung on the screen where you choose keyboard language. cd drive starts and stops when I start trying different icons to see what happens. I think it's running of the cd when I want to install on the hard drive. If some one has run into this before I would appreciate an assist. Just in case it isn't obvious, I am a total newbie, so if apologies are in order everybody has them, and happy St. Patricks Day!!!!! ;

    Re: Hung install

    I would try the alternate installation cd:
    http://ubuntu.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirror...kubuntu/gutsy/

    read more:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

    Conversely you could also try the latest (hardy) version. As it will be released shortly and has been behaving nicely up until now. It also has a better (more stable) installer from the live cd.

    While you are at it then have a look here:
    http://www.linuxloader.com/modules.p...&pid=32&page=4

    It is definitely suggested to have a separate /home partition and depending on your data a separate /data partition would be advisable as well.

    I hope this points you in the right direction and welcome (almost ) to the party

      Re: Hung install

      It sounds like you might have a bad CD there. You have to burn them at 4X speed due to the compression technology used to make the ISO image.

      I agree with Fintan that the Alternate CD is more flexible.

      Luck o' the Irish to you!

        Re: Hung install,solved sort of

        Thanks all and every-one for the help. I have it sorted out, after a fashion, I also had a copy of ubuntu and put it in. it got as far as step 4, starting to partition the hard drive(guided of course as I am a newbie). I then left it and went to bed. I got up to do some business about 4 am and checked on it. All was well. There was just so much,...stuff,.. on the drive it took that long for ubuntu to do its thing. I have still another machine I am evicting the dust bunnies and tiny farmers from and plan to use my kubuntu cd in that one.So thanks to everyone for the support for a new guy, things are going well
