    need sound help

i cant seem to find any information on getting my sound to work. when i run lspci -v and scroll down and find my sound card this is what i find below

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Unknown device 011d
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
    Memory at f0500000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
    Capabilities: <access denied>

i have looked for alsa drivers, but could not find any for the ich8 chipset. anyone have any ideas?

Most folks can work their way through this and eventually fix it:

      Re: need sound help

Probably superflous but mine reads ver similar and i also have no sound:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Unknown device 011b
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 23
      Memory at f0500000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [70] Express Unknown type IRQ 0

Admittedly I am very new to Linux but have gone through that thread 2 and a half times with the first step b eing successful it doesn't leave me many options to try.

At a loss and becoming somewhat frustrated since i've been almost a month without my music (half the reason i bought this new nb.

          monte, thank you.

i am now listening to the cheerful and hopeful sounds of Fionn Regan as i type.

just a couple of concerns which someone may be able to direct me to do something if need be.

at step F.4.2 i was told:
          "sudo: /etc/init.d/alsasound: command not found"

then at another step a bit later:
          * Setting up ALSA...
          * warning: 'alsactl restore' failed with error message 'alsactl: set_control:989: warning: name mismatch (Master Playback Volume/Front Playback Volume) for control #1
alsactl: set_control:991: warning: index mismatch (0/0) for control #1
alsactl: set_control:989: warning: name mismatch (Off-hook Switch/Front Playback Switch) for control #2
alsactl: set_control:991: warning: index mismatch (0/0) for control #2
          alsactl: set_control:1083: bad control.2.value type'...

amixer: Mixer hw:0 load error: Invalid argument
amixer: Mixer hw:0 load error: Invalid argument
amixer: Mixer hw:0 load error: Invalid argument
          etc.

Then later again (perhaps not surprisingly given the first concern):
          "ALSA driver is already running."

If there is nothing to worry about, i'd still appreciate someone telling me to put my mind at rest.

          next, the wireless card...

            Re: need sound help

The first error you incurred is normal. Both commands at F.4 are there to ensure that alsa is completely stopped. The second step may be unnecessary, but I included it since it does not hurt anything to run it.

Regarding the other error. I am not sure what is causing that to happen. If the only time you encountered that error was during alsa installation and sound is now working correctly, I would disregard it.

Regarding wireless. What is the 'lspci' output regarding your wireless card?

that was the best answer you could give. thanks mike

as for the wireless, i thought perhaps i should post it in another thread so...

by the way, not sure if what i've included is or isn't the lspci output
