Kubuntu distribution with Mirrors & P2P

This is more for Windows users who are downloading Kubuntu...if you have GetRight 6, you can use a .metalink file to download from mirrors & P2P at the same time. If you've got a good connection, you'll have a really speedy download.

cool, so this is what the getright guys were talking about by bridging the gap of P2P with Web-Seeding. I knew this would finally catch mainstream.

This is better than the .torrent implementation, because in the .torrent webseeding spec (Kubuntu doesn't have webseeds in the torrents for its ISO) the webseed only kicked in if there were very little seeds, but this seems to be geared towards faster downloads, with the webseed constantly being available.... cool!

Re: Kubuntu distribution with Mirrors & P2P

yep, its a FTP/HTTP & P2P hybrid...BitTorrent, ED2k,magnet links...or other p2p networks could be added, & the client uses whatever it supports. Right now GetRight just does torrent & ftp/http. In theory it'll draw as much as it can from p2p (free) but then saturate your downstream w/ downloads from mirrors. Kubuntu doesn't seem to be on as many mirrors, but for something like Fedora it really helps...here's what files look like (theres actually a lot more links in the real file):

No unix client yet, but hopefully someone will get interested in writing one soon.

Re: Kubuntu distribution with Mirrors & P2P

There are now metalink clients for Mac, Windows, and Unix.

There are Ubuntu .debs for aria2 at http://www.raphink.net/ubuntu/

More sites are using metalink: OpenOffice.org, Arch Linux, DesktopBSD, PC-BSD, BLAG Linux, StartCom Linux, Berry Linux, Puppy Linux, redWall Firewall, and others.

Here's some examples:
http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/magnet.html
http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version#Metalink
http://www.archlinux.org/download/
http://www.desktopbsd.net/index.php?id=73

If you guys try it out, I'd like to hear your comments.
