This is definitively something to work on. I don't want to have to edit the Xorg.conf to make work. Xlg should be up and running out of the box so we can read video / play games without having to install any drivers

What you want has nothing to do with XGL. XGL (and AIGLX) are mainly used for eye candy applications like Berly/Compiz and require official video drives to be installed to be used.

What you want is official graphics drivers for your card to be installed by default. These will never be included in any Ubuntu variant because of the legal and moral issues of closed source proprietary drivers.

That being said it doesnt take any manual Xorg modification to setup, a quick install of the drivers through Adept, and enabled through the System Settings > Advanced > Restricted Drivers panel, and you are good to go. (You have to restart X for them to take effect).

There are, however, some distros who dont take the extreme moral high ground that Ubuntu (and many others do) and dont have any problem including these drivers, installed, out of the box.

Trouble is, in my case, it won't do the job. i still had to go and edit the Xorg conf to get things working ok.

mainly, it tries to use aiglx, that is a no go with ati card. (or maybe a no go with the flgrx drivers , anyway).
So anything that requiers 3D (games and compiz mainly) will be slow, or won't work at all...

The main trouble is that the newer ati card are not supported by the non-proprietary driver. Only the vesa driver will work, and well...

Only Ubuntu does this, Kubuntu does not, and I hope they never will.

Its a bad idea to enable compiz out of the box. And by not installing your graphics drivers, it just makes it worse.

What they need is a popup like Sabayon has, when you first boot it gives you the choice

1. XGL (for ATI)
2. AIGLX (for nVidia)
3. None (if you dont want compiz and friends)

You can go back into this dialog and ghange your settings at any time. That would solve many problems.

Ditto that. I nuked a ubuntu (gnome) gutsy last night by getting greedy in my choices :P
